Organized by the Indian army which always fears pakistani attacks, and sponsored by rich Hindus, the Amarnath Yatra is only open during two months, when the high passes can be crossed by thousands of pilgrims. All along this extraordinary pilgrimage, we were the only westerners to walk through those Kashmir mountains with thousands of Hindu and Shiva devotees. Thus, constantly questioned and called upon by everyone, we remained very close to the pilgrims, which enabled us to tie up privileged friendships with a population form all over India: townsmen, saddhus, fishermen, farmers, hindus working abroad and the muslims living in the region from the pilgrimage as "horse-men" and porters.
