Aside from the inland waterways followed by the tourist boats, we chose to follow the inhabitants to their villages, deep in the Backwaters -also called "Kuttanad". We thus took the public ferry connecting the town of Allepey with Kottayam, dropping off men, women and goods on the various unloading docks marking out the navigable channels on its way. Far away, thus protected from the urban influence, the villages there preserved a way of life in perfect harmony with the surrounding nature. Against all expectations, this area is the theatre of an incredible human and commercial activity: whether it's the farming work in the fields next to the water canals or the comings and goings of the boatmen and the fishermen on their dugouts… A world living with the seasons and especially with the waters of the "Backwaters".
