Ancient capital of China, Xi'an was the starting point of the Silk Road for centuries. Leaving this large, modern city, we went up through the Gansu corridor to Dunhuang, at the doors of Xinjiang province. Dominated by impressive sand dunes, this small city is at the edge of the Taklamakan desert. At the center of the Uyghur country, we finally reached Turpan. Located under the sea level, this oasis profits from an exceptional situation : not far from here are the ancient ruins of Jiahoe and the small village of Tuyoq dominated by the “Mountains of fire.”
